Guided tour
Haussmann Paris

The avenue of the Opéra

Presentation :

When Louis Napoléon Bonaparte became French emperor in 1852, Paris’ population had already dramatically increased from 600 000 in 1845 to 1 million in 1848. On the eve of the industrial revolution, a majority of its poor inhabitants lived in unsanitary conditions which caused many diseases. Following Napoleon III’s recommendations, Baron Haussmann, prefect of the Seine in 1853 , launched a massive urbanization of Paris, modernized the city, which created new green areas while ‘steam-cleaning’ Paris.

200 kilometers of roads, 34 000 modern constructions and large avenues and boulevards to ease the traffic were built : the Haussmann style building, inspired by the architectural eclectic taste, modelled the new city. Our tour, from Opera Garnier district to Place du Châtelet, offers a brilliant example of the massive urbanization of the city during the Second Empire.
