When Louis Napol\u00e9on Bonaparte<\/strong> becomes French emperor in 1852, Paris\u2019 population had already dramatically increased from 600 000 in 1845 to 1 million in 1848. On the eve of the industrial revolution, a majority of its poor inhabitants live in unsanitary conditions which caused many diseases. Following Napoleon III\u2019s recommendations, Eug\u00e8ne Haussmann, prefect of the Seine in 1853 , launches a massive urbanization of Paris<\/strong>, modernizes the city and creates new green areas while \u2018steam-cleaning\u2019 Paris<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

200 kilometers of roads<\/strong>, 34 000 modern buildings<\/strong> and large avenues and boulevards to ease the traffic are built : the Haussmann style building, inspired by the architectural eclectic taste, models the new city. Our tour, from Opera Garnier<\/strong> district to Place du Ch\u00e2telet, <\/strong>offers a brilliant example of the massive urbanization of the city during the Second Empire.<\/p>\n
